My work explores heterotopic spaces and states, where normal rules don't apply - gardens, raves, hiking, wilderness, holidays, reading - collective effervescence - euphoria - connection - autonomy - transcendental immersion of losing oneself - parallel psychological zones where you proactively choose what to engage in. 

My paintings enact literal, thematic and curatorial hide-and-seek games of perception, investigations into the medium of painting itself. Hidden figures and objects reveal themselves on their terms, often veiled by weather, foliage, sunglasses, cigarette hazes, reflections and shadows, or negotiated through close tones, material disruption or inverting traditional placement, cropping, spatial forms and hierarchies that often embrace metafiction, adding further unruly layers. Viewers must actively hunt through empathetic textures and imagery to solve and catch them, duelling with neuroscience and optical mechanics. My Puzzle Paintings enact the mechanics of cryptic crosswords, murder mysteries and optical illusions, with art historical, medium, linguistic and word-play clues that flip initial impressions. 

I often paint through the night in a hypnopompic state echoing the non-conforming, embodied energy of rave culture, one dreamstate my work inhabits.
